Novartis Wonderwall

Novartis Campus
2004

The research and development area of the pharmaceutical company, Novartis, shares a border with a public park in Basel. This fence was designed to separate the two in a secure but friendly fashion. The client required that the barrier be strong enough to withstand the impact of a ten-tonne truck, the largest vehicle available for hire in Switzerland, driven at speed. Reconciling this specification with a sense of play proved a challenge. It took several attempts to achieve sufficient graphic density to make the fence look appealing rather than forbidding. Alan Fletcher imagined parents bringing their children to the park to spot favourite characters and motifs. The illustrations inspired by Victorian motif books were brought to life by illustrator Andrew Davidson.
